This is one of my favorite pictures from a 2013 trip to South Africa. Why is this one a favorite. I am not really sure. Partly it is because it is such a treat to get to see African Wild Dogs - they are endangered and we came across a pack of 24. It was a special experience.
But mostly it is the mood here - the stare and the stance. That look of his is in one way quite menacing. This is not your friendly neighborhood Fido. But that is not the only way I see these wild dogs. They are fascinating, clever, inquisitive and complex animals. It is fascinating to see the pack social structure at work. I can't remember whether this was the pack's alpha male - but he certainly has a presence.
